How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Atlanta’s Summer

Get your Atlanta HVAC system ready before the heat hits. A practical pre-summer checklist: what you can do yourself, and what’s worth having a technician handle.

Atlanta summers are brutal on HVAC systems. Temperatures routinely hit the 90s, humidity stays high well into the evening, and your AC may run 10–14 hours a day for months on end. A system that hasn’t been serviced is far more likely to fail when you need it most — typically during the hottest stretch of July or August.

Here’s a practical pre-summer checklist you can work through yourself, and the items that are worth having a technician handle before the busy season starts.

The ideal time to do this is late March or April — before the heat arrives and before every HVAC company in Atlanta is booked two weeks out.

DIY Pre-Summer Checks

Start with the items you can handle yourself:

  • Replace the air filter. Fresh filter before the heavy-use season.
  • Clear the area around the outdoor unit. Remove leaves, debris, and trim back vegetation to at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides.
  • Rinse the condenser coils. Gently spray the outdoor unit with a garden hose to remove dust and cottonwood seeds from the coil fins. Work from the inside out if possible.
  • Test the thermostat. Switch to cool mode and confirm the system responds correctly. Replace thermostat batteries while you’re at it.
  • Check and open all supply vents. Closed or blocked vents reduce airflow and can cause coil freezing.
  • Clear the condensate drain line. Pour a cup of white vinegar into the drain pan or cleanout port to prevent algae buildup that causes drain blockages and water damage.

What a Professional Tune-Up Covers

A pre-season professional tune-up typically costs $80–$150 and includes items you can’t do safely yourself:

  • Refrigerant level check and leak test
  • Electrical connection inspection and tightening
  • Capacitor and contactor testing
  • Blower motor and fan blade inspection
  • Coil cleaning with commercial coil cleaner
  • System performance test (temperature split measurement)

Signs Your System Needs More Than a Tune-Up

While doing your pre-summer checks, watch for these warning signs that a repair may be needed: unusual noises during startup, ice on the copper lines, any burning smell, the outdoor unit failing to start, or the system running constantly without reaching the set temperature. Book a diagnostic call sooner rather than later — these problems don’t resolve themselves and get worse in the heat.
