HVAC warranties can save you thousands of dollars — or leave you with an unexpected bill — depending on whether you understand the terms and maintain your system correctly. Most homeowners only discover the fine print after a repair is denied.
This guide covers how manufacturer warranties work, what a registered warranty adds, the labour warranty you should expect from your installer, and the most common ways homeowners accidentally void their coverage.
Reading this before your next service call or new installation could save you a significant amount of money.

Manufacturer Parts Warranty
Most HVAC equipment comes with a manufacturer’s parts warranty — typically 5 years on standard components and 10 years on the compressor and heat exchanger. This covers the cost of replacement parts if they fail due to a manufacturing defect.
Important: the parts warranty does not cover labour. A compressor replacement covered under warranty can still cost $600–$1,200 in labour charges. Some installers offer labour warranties that extend this coverage.
Registered vs. Unregistered Warranty
Most major brands (Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem) offer extended warranty coverage — often 10 years on all parts — but only if you register the equipment online within 60–90 days of installation. Without registration, the warranty typically drops to 5 years on parts.
Your installer should register the equipment for you. If they don’t, do it yourself on the manufacturer’s website as soon as your new system is installed. It takes 10 minutes and can double your coverage.
What Voids Your Warranty
Warranty terms vary by manufacturer, but these are the most common coverage-voiding situations:
- Installation by an unlicensed contractor. Virtually all manufacturer warranties require installation by a licensed HVAC contractor. DIY installation voids coverage entirely.
- Failure to register within the registration window. Miss the window, lose the extended coverage.
- Improper refrigerant handling. Using the wrong refrigerant type, overcharging, or having refrigerant added without addressing the underlying leak can void coverage.
- Lack of annual maintenance. Some manufacturers require documented annual professional maintenance to maintain warranty validity. Keep your service records.
- Unauthorised modifications. Adding non-approved components or modifying the system outside manufacturer specifications.
Labour Warranty: What to Expect from Your Installer
HVAC Pro provides a 12-month labour warranty on all installation and repair work. This means if the same fault recurs within 12 months of our repair, we return and fix it at no charge. Ask any installer what their labour warranty covers before you book — it’s a meaningful indicator of confidence in their work.
