How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Atlanta’s Summer

Atlanta summers are brutal on HVAC systems. Temperatures routinely hit the 90s, humidity stays high well into the evening, and your AC may run 10–14 hours a day for months on end. A system that hasn’t been serviced is far more likely to fail when you need it most — typically during the hottest stretch of July or August.

Here’s a practical pre-summer checklist you can work through yourself, and the items that are worth having a technician handle before the busy season starts.

The ideal time to do this is late March or April — before the heat arrives and before every HVAC company in Atlanta is booked two weeks out.

DIY Pre-Summer Checks

Start with the items you can handle yourself:

• Replace the air filter. Fresh filter before the heavy-use season.
• Clear the area around the outdoor unit. Remove leaves, debris, and trim back vegetation to at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides.
• Rinse the condenser coils. Gently spray the outdoor unit with a garden hose to remove dust and cottonwood seeds from the coil fins. Work from the inside out if possible.
• Test the thermostat. Switch to cool mode and confirm the system responds correctly. Replace thermostat batteries while you’re at it.
• Check and open all supply vents. Closed or blocked vents reduce airflow and can cause coil freezing.
• Clear the condensate drain line. Pour a cup of white vinegar into the drain pan or cleanout port to prevent algae buildup that causes drain blockages and water damage.
